About: emma mason
Name: Emma Mason
Category: Publishing & Printing
Established in 2004 Emma Mason specialises in work by artists and makers working in Britain from the 1950s onwards, with an emphasis on printmaking. It is run by Emma and Richard Mason, and also working in the gallery, Jane Fisher.
Our story began with Emma meeting printmaker, Robert Tavener soon after we moved from London to Eastbourne in 2002 with our two young children. Emma and Tavener found that they had much in common and a friendship began. In the following years, before Tavener’s death, Emma helped him organise his studio and archive, spanning nearly fifty years of printmaking.
The inspiration for setting up the gallery came from Robert Tavener, his work and the conversations Emma had with him about the craft of printmaking. Our gallery is in Eastbourne, a short walk from the seafront.
Emma studied History of Art & Italian at Leicester University. She worked for many years in the fruit trade as an importer, much of the time based at New Covent Garden in London. Richard studied Fine Art & English at Lancaster University and prior to joining the gallery taught art and design. We have written several books and articles related to our artists. We can also act as consultants on projects and exhibitions. Past clients include The National Theatre, Towner Gallery, The House of Commons and Pallant House Gallery. We hold regular exhibitions and also take part in art fairs around the country.
