Train Station Demonstration
This morning (20th February), members of the Eastbourne unLtd Chamber of Commerce demonstrated outside Eastbourne railway station against the impact the Southern dispute is having on local businesses and commuters lives.
They were joined by members of ABC Commuters and the Eastbourne Hospitality Association.
Christina Ewbank, Chief Executive said:
“We’re protesting because we seem to be right where we started almost a year ago, so we thought it was important to come and speak out to show Eastbourne has had enough.
“We’re not a hotbed of radical dissent, we don’t normally hold demonstrations and wave placards, but we’ve really had enough.
“We don’t apportion blame, we just want this sorted out as our members can’t face another six months of strikes.
"The customer service at Southern has been unacceptable since GTR took over in the summer of 2015; well before the first strike in April 2016 so we are asking the DfT, GTR and the unions to work together to improve the situation urgently.”

Dave Brachtvogel, Chairman of the Eastbourne Hospitality Association, said:
“We feel strongly about this. The rail strike is impacting our businesses to the point we are having to lay staff off in some of the bigger hotels, and that’s not a very good scenario for Eastbourne, which depends on tourism as its lifeblood.”

"In 2015, Eastbourne UnLtd made Christmas for our town with over 50,000 people visiting the centre as a direct result of the activities managed and co-ordinated by the Chamber. One of the highlights was the Coca Cola truck which proved what a night time economy can look like."
